Celler Jané Ventura - Introduction
Like any other wineries in this region the vineyard is trying to keep the tradition using indigenous grape varieties such as Sumoll, which is a local red grape variety grows in Penedès and Catalonia. The region is alive combining with new ideas and new vitification approach to show their versatility. JANÉ VENTURA is a family-run winery in Lower Penedès (el Baix Penedès) with a tradition that dates back to 1914. It all began with Josep Jané, the grandfather of Benjamí Jané Ventura.
The second generation, Albert Jané Jané, became prominent wine distributors and acquired the current winery at El Vendrell in 1954.
The third generation, Benjamí Jané Ventura, began bottling wines in 1985, and in 1988 started the production of sparkling wines (cavas).
The fourth generation is represented by Gerard Jané Úbeda, an œnologist, who became in charge of the production of today’s Jané Ventura range for prestigious wines and cavas.
The philosophy of each generation reflects how to treat wine and vines as a way of life – based on mutual respect and admiration for the unique natural environment. This philosophy of JANÉ VENTURA has been carried through generations, respecting the surrounding environment and its tradition. This philosophy is the main core of the production at JANÉ VENTURA. The message is clear by all whose works have been encapsulated by such a concept as culture, landscape and creativity are found in the soul of their wines.
" Making wine is a way of showing our generosity and gratitude for being alive. It’s our contribution towards making the planet a better place."
Wines:
Mas Viella 2010 - This red wine is the result of the perfect adaption of selected grape varieties to the vineyard’s soil. It comes from their 15th Century built country estate called Mas Vilella, which is located at the foothill of the Sierra del Montmell. Blended with 95% of Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% of Sumoll, native red grape variety found mainly in this region. Low yield management manually harvested grapes have been carefully selected and being transferred for 15 days into a maceration process where the aim was to extract more flavour from the wine. Ageing 13 months in French oak barrels to give the wine more complex structure and balance. Bottled in June 2012. Tasting note shows dense fruity aromas blackcurrant black cherry flavour, lean, peppery flavour lead to lively palate. Medium – Medium (+) in body, medium (+) in intensity, tannin fresh and soft with a medium (+) finish. As an Estate Wine I would highly recommended and falls into a reasonable price range. Guía Peñín Wine Guide 2014 scored the wine 91 points
Jané Ventura Blanc Seleccio 2013: This wine made of old vines of Xarelo (70%) and Macabeu (15%), Malvasia de Sitges (10%) and White Grenache (5%). Vintage 2013 was cold with the mild spring and summer leading towards to a slow and progressive maturation. Its result was pure in fruity aromas with natural freshness. The wine grapes have been carefully selected and macerated in cold for 24 hours and fermented in stainless steel tank under 17 degrees for short period of time. In the final stage the wine has been rested on lees for 3 months. Tasting notes shows tropical fruits honeydew, pineapple, grapefruits, a hint of lychee with fennel notes. Minerality is at presence, reflects pretty much the local terroir gives this wine extra volume alongside white flower reminiscences. Light to medium in body, medium in intensity, alcohol shows from medium (-) to medium tendency with a fresh and crispy medium finish. Perfect company to any seafood dishes.
Gran Reserva "Do" de Jané Ventura - Vintage 2008: This exceptional cava made of local grape varieties Xarelo (60%), Macebeo and Parellada (14%). “The aim of this Cava is to achieve the maximum expression of the refinement and elegance endowed by the three traditional grape varieties, with more influence from ageing to attain a complex Cava with greater structure and creaminess.” 5% of the base wine is fermented and aged in French oak barrels gives the cava a twist on the tasting note. This beautiful yellow coloured sparkling wine with frothy and persistent fine-bubbles gives elegant and candid aromas by ageing 45 months. Combination of aromas such as bread, patisserie and biscuit notes do not overshadow the fruitiness (apple, apricot, quince) of the sparkling wine. This cava shows flavour carnival on palate alongside with aromatic fennel note as well. “DO” refers to a music note on the label which without a doubt lifts this sparkling wine higher as we expected. The result is, it can age further in the bottle still. Drink as you would Champagne. Highly Recommended!
