Codorniu - Introduction

There is no need for further introduction when we mention the name of Raventós Family. They are the oldest family business in Spain and according to its website 17th oldest in the World. The family business is more than 460 years old dedicated their work creating wines and sparkling wines through generation. Undoubtedly one of the many who has strong vision where they wish to take the vineyard.

Those 10 wineries are well-known internationally and nationally: Codorníu, Raimat Legaris, Bach, Scala Dei, Abadía de Poblet, Bilbaínas Winery, Nuviana, Artesa and Séptima.

“Quality in all steps of our process – starting with our most basic elements, the grapes. More than 3,000 hectares of vineyards are owned by us.”

MISSION, VISION & QUALITY.....

“ Our commitment to the earth and society goes back to the beginnings of our business activity. That is why our company has been sustainable over time since 1551, taking care of our planet, whose fruits are the basis of our business, and likewise taking care of people -- the true makers of our leading position.

Now more than ever, this commitment can be seen in the management of the Codorníu Raventós Group from essentially four lines of work: care for the environment, for local development, for people and for the promotion of healthy living habits. Our winemaking activities use sustainable agricultural techniques, minimize the use of chemical products, streamline the use of water resources and watch out for the natural ecosystems where the vine is cultivated. Therefore, Codorníu is a leader in sustainable practices within the wine world.

Care for the environment is not only present in the first manufacturing phase; in fact, it is broadened out to the entire value chain. We have reduced the weight of our bottles and, as a result, the impact of our carbon footprint. We use recyclable materials and manage our energy and waste based on environmental principles.

Wherever our wineries are located, we promote the development of regional products and generate value in local communities through our winery tours. Our commitment also spreads to our people – the team that makes up Codorníu Raventós and that manufactures our wines with passion and respect for the earth. Thanks to them, we have great wines and brands whose objective is to delight consumers.”

Wines:

Anna de Codorniu Brut Rosé: The origin of the name comes from the marriage of Anna Codorniu and Miquel Raventós. The union of the two wine maker family has truly established the foundation of the winery. This cava won many international awards because “Femininity and seduction in its purest form is the most appropriate definition for this cava. The essence of Anna is expressed in this rosé wine: a sensuality that goes from its exclusive design to its vinification, which gives it freshness, personality and aromatic intensity that make each glass a great occasion.” According to the actual website. Using classic grape varieties Pinot Noir (70%) and Chardonnay (30%) give the Cava “ delicate” strawberry colour with fine and persistent bubbles. The cavalcade of red fruits shine through the nose medium acidity and medium in body cava has an elegant and refreshing finish on the palate. “Both the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes come from own vineyards located in Lleida, the region with the most continental climate in D.O. Cava. This location provides the grapes with optimum concentration, lower acidity, and greater body and intensity. Harvest of the grapes takes place towards the middle of August and is always carried out at night, so as to keep the grapes as fresh as possible, thereby retaining aroma and avoiding oxidation or spontaneous fermentation.”

Gran Codorniu Gran Reserva Xarel·lo 2009: What can you expect behind the hidden walls at Cellar of Codorniu. We cannot be disappointed with this vintage at all. Each Cava comes from a different estate, and each of them presents a unique personality. 50 months of ageing provides the sparkling wine complexity and structure. Keeping the freshness and vividness in the bottle. Surprisingly Xarel -Llo shows its aromatic side alongside with a distinctive pearl and creamy notes followed by a hint of herbal and waxy characters. “Glorious revolution” in many way simply trapping bubbles in the bottle. Highly recommended!
